We’ve all heard of the enigmatic and challenging climb to Pico, the highest point in Portugal, but what other activities can be done on this second largest island in the Azores archipelago?
Today we bring you 5 suggestions that you really can’t leave out of your itinerary:
Gruta das Torres (cave) in Criação Velha
This volcanic cave, located in the municipality of Madalena, is the longest lava tunnel in the archipelago and is about 5 kilometers long.
Pico Wine Museum
This museum opened in 1999 is an extension of the Pico Museum, which integrates two other sections, the Whalers Museum and the Whaling Industry Museum.
During this visit, it is also possible to observe traditional vineyards and taste the delicious wine of the region.
Vine Culture Landscape
Still in the wine business, this is a must-see. The Vineyard Culture Landscape, which covers an area of 987 hectares, was classified in 2004 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
These volcanic soil vineyards mark not only the landscapes of the island but also the wine lovers.
Natural Pools of Pico Island
Poça das Mujas is, for many, the best natural pool on Pico Island. Located in Calheta de Nesquim, this is the ideal place to relax.
Another well known pool is the São Roque do Pico natural pool. Its crystal clear waters and the natural beauty that surrounds it are the perfect notes for a well spent afternoon.
Madalena's Historical Center
This represents one of the most important historical centers of the Azores archipelago.
There you will find the Church of Santa Maria Madalena and numerous picturesque streets that are worth exploring.
